ONLY BACK A FORTNIGHT (Burnley Express 9/11/1918) Mr. And Mrs. Smith, of 18 Cotton-street,
Burnley, have lost their only son, Pte. Richard Smith, 241413, of the
East Lancashire Territorials, who died of wounds in France on October
20th. A single young man, now 26years of age, he joined the Army on April
28th 1915 and in January, 1916, went out to Egypt, coming to France in
March, 1917. Since coming to the Western front he had been slightly gassed
on one occasion. A sad fact is that he had only returned to France, after
leave, a fortnight before he met his fatal wounds. Pte. Smith was previously
a weaver at Stansfield’s Mill, in the Meadows, and he was associated
with Holy Trinity Church. One brother-in-law is a prisoner of war in Germany,
another is serving, being in England at the present time.
