TWO BURNLEY BROTHERS
ONE KILLED, ANOTHER WOUNDED (Burnley Express 11/11/1916)

News from the War Office reached Burnley on Thursday night of the death in action on November 1st of Pte. Walter Yates, Northumberland Fusiliers. Pte. Yates was the youngest son of Mr. John Yates, formerly of Accrington-road, Burnley, now resident at 73, Upper Stanhope-street Liverpool .
Pte. Yates, who was 22 years of age, was wounded at Ypres and invalided home in the early part of 1915. After spending some time in this country he was sent abroad again with the Salonika forces. He was educated at Coal Clough and the Higher Grade School, and as a lad was a member of the choir at Holy Trinity.
Harold Yates, a brother, aged 23, seen on the left of the photo, emigrated to Australia a few years ago ; joined the first Expeditionary Force which went to the Dardanelles, where he was wounded, and was also invalided to this country. On account of the development of deafness in one ear he was sent back to Australia (where he is now on home service) in May last.
The photo was taken in Liverpool in September, 1915, when the two brothers were there together on a visit to their father. Mr. Yates’ eldest son, Fred is in training with the Royal engineers at Dunstable.
